Awareness for Change

Awareness for Change is an initiative that seeks to provide education regarding the realities of life in African countries. In response to the many stereotypes about Africa held in Canadian culture, Future of Africa aims to confront and challenge misconceptions and offer a fresh perspective. Awareness for Change initiatives encourage open dialogue and provideĀ  a forum in which to raise questions, seek answers, and generate discussion about prevalent issues in Africa.

Future of Africa initiatives designed to raise Awareness for Change include the Documentary Series, Speaker Series, and MyReality.

The Documentary Series provides screenings of educational films pertaining to life in Africa and some of the challenging realities that are regularly faced. Following the documentary, attendees engage in a discussion to debrief and further explore the theme, issues, and ideas presented in the film.

The Speaker Series provides an opportunity to learn about a particular issue or topic from a knowledgeable source. Whether the guest is an African citizen or previous Journey for Change participants speaking about their experiences, or a university professor with relevant research interests, the Speaker Series seeks to engage and inform participants and create dialogue through the open invitation for questions.

MyReality seeks to explore and raise awareness about the realities of African life through a focus on particular topics. Structured as a informal roundtable discussion, MyReality enables individuals who have had first hand experience living or working in African countries to share their personal stories, invites discussion participants to openly ask questions, and warmly welcome those who simply wish to listen and learn from the experiences of their peers.

Above all, Awareness for Change aims to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment within which to learn about the lived reality of Africa, without the pressure of contributing to discussion. It provides an opportunity to create and engage in open dialogue, broaden your personal perspectives, and interact and connect with a network of peers who share similar passions and interests.
